Your wedding rings and engagement ring will be one of the most timeless elements of your wedding day. The wedding ring you choose for yourself and your fiancé is not only a essential part of the wedding ceremony, but it is also a long lasting symbol of your love and commitment. The decision therefore, is to choose rings that are enduring and of the highest quality as it will be a one time purchase and you will be wearing it for a long time to come.

Like many things for your wedding, you want to be an educated consumer who knows what your dollar is getting you. You also want to make sure the ring will endure the style changes of the decades to come. Here are some of the criteria we suggest you consider and learn about before making your big purchase:

STYLE

You should always follow your own instinct with the design and look of your wedding ring. The time-honoured plain gold band will be in style for years to come, however, for a more unique look, consider a ring of channel-set gems such has the diamond. Before making the final decision, be sure that your ring is expressive of your own personality and style. If it is in your budget consider a custom wedding. Something simple like a row of diamonds that can be made to fit around your engagement ring and a matching band of gold with small inset diamonds can be made to match for your fiancé

METALS - GOLD, SILVER AND PLATINUM

Often times, couples will chose the metal for their bands by matching the color and design of their engagement ring. This is not necessarily a hard and fast rule. A bride can always keep her engagement ring on her right hand and the wedding band on the left. As well, your ring and your fiancé’s ring can be in a similar style with different metals. Think about what metals each of you wear on a regular basis. It is important to match any wedding band you choose to your regular daily wear (such as a watch or bracelet).

GEMS

The focal point of most wedding rings is the precious gems that are used. It often dictates the design and style which in turn is an expression of you the bride or groom. One consideration to keep in mind is that you will be wearing this ring every day for the rest of your life. You want to be sure that the precious gems in your band will be strong enough for a lifetime of “wear and tear”. For someone who does a lot of activity with their hands, you may want to limit your precious stones to sapphires, rubies, and diamonds. Many jewelers recommend that you use a precious gem that is rated at least 7 or above for your wedding ring.

Here is a list of the common stones used for the wedding band and their hardness rating:

Diamonds 10
Rubies 9
Sapphire 9
Emerald 8
Topaz 8
Aquamarine 7.5 to 8
Amethyst 7
