Traditional Chinese wedding invitations are often printed on red paper in gold foil ink. Usually, an icon of a phoenix and dragon with a double happiness symbol is found on most traditional Chinese wedding invitations. However, many Chinese couples are looking for more modern wedding invitations. This is where it is important to have a balance, integrating the western style of invitations with traditional Chinese wedding invitations. If the bride and groom have parents that are very traditional and follow Chinese customs, the invitations can be done be done in a western style but using red and gold colours. You can use a deeper red stock rather than the traditional poppy red colour of paper, and break it up using some gold ribbon. The red stock can be a textured linen paper, or a shimmery pearlized cardstock. The dragon and phoenix can be added more subtly by moving it to the background as a watermark behind your invitation text. The final touch would be to choose a modern styled double happiness and print that on the front tag between your names.

The double happiness symbol is an element or print that is essential for Chinese wedding invitations and if included in the design of your custom wedding invitations in a soft way, it can bring elegance and joy to your wedding invitation. There are different types of double happiness symbols. It can have a brushed look. This tends to be the more traditional style, or it can be enclosed in a box or circle design that makes it look stamped. The double happiness symbol is usually printed in red or gold ink. More recently, it has also been accepted in pink or burgundy colour ink however, it is never printed in black ink!

Less traditional Chinese wedding invitations

If the bride and groom’s parents are not too traditional but still want to incorporate some Chinese elements to the invitation you may not need to use red paper at all! You can use other colours such as pink, lilac, silver, gold, mango, or any other “happy” colour! The dragon and phoenix will not be necessary, but the double happiness should still be present! It can be printed in small print on the front with your monogram or names, or at the top of the invitation text on the main layout, or on the response card. Printing flower graphics such as bamboo or orchids on your invitations helps incorporate a Chinese theme while maintaining a contemporary wedding invitation look.

Non Traditional Chinese Wedding Invitations

If the bride and groom’s parents are not traditional at all, you can use any paper colours you wish. However, you should avoid black and blue. The most understanding Chinese parents would not want to send black wedding invitations to their guests as these are used only for funerals in the Chinese tradition! Although your parents may not mind, some of their guests and relatives may not be so understanding and it may find it offensive or it may make a bad impression. The double happiness may not be necessary to include on the front of the invitation, but can be printed on the response card or on the main layout.

Wedding Invitation Wording

If you require Chinese printing on your invitations, you can have your wedding invitations company translate for you. Be aware that for a Chinese wedding, the groom’s side of the family is usually the host, so unlike western invitations were the bride’s name and her parents are listed first, the groom’s name and family is usually listed first. In the Chinese text, the bride and groom is introduced with their birth position. That is, if the bride is the eldest, it will read, “eldest daughter, Jane”, and if the groom is the youngest, it will read, “youngest son, Adam”. Be sure to give this information to your wedding invitation company, to ensure accuracy of the translation.

Your bilingual invitations can be done in two different ways. All of your invitations can have both English and Chinese print, or you can print them separately with only one language each and have some of them printed in English, and some in Chinese. This can help save on the wedding budget. Translating your wedding invitation text to Chinese may take extra time, so be sure to order your invitations early!
